Make These: Surprise Easter Egg Bath Bombs!

What sounds better: Soaking in a hot, bubbly bath? Or eating chocolate out of a plastic egg that used to be sitting in your backyard? Yeah, we thought so. These Easter eggs definitely have the better treat inside – DIY homemade bath bombs! Bath bombs are easy enough to pick up at the mall, but are much more affordable to make at home. Plus these Easter egg bath bombs come with a little surprise chick inside. I mean, c’mon. That’s adorable.

Materials

• 1/4 cup Epsom or sea salt
• 1/4 cup cornstarch
• 1/4 cup food-grade  citric acid
• 1/2 cup baking soda
• 2 tablespoons  coconut oil
• Witch hazel (as needed)
• Essential oils
• Food coloring
• Plastic Easter eggs
• Large bowl
• Whisk
• Small plastic sealable bags
• Chenille chicks or other small figurine

Step

Begin by prepping your “surprises!” Place each chick inside a small plastic bag, press out the air, and seal. To keep the bag from expanding inside the bath bomb, roll up the bag to a small shape, and tape in place.

The homemade bath bomb mixture starts by combining all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk together to remove any clumps. Next, mix in the 10-20 drops of essential oil with the coconut oil, one tablespoon at a time (hint: if the coconut oil is too congealed, try microwaving it for 5-15 seconds).

Add the food coloring slowly, between 5-20 drops, depending on the intensity of color desired.

At this point the mixture may be ready to be placed in molds. The mixture should appear powder-like, but should keep its shape when you grab a handful of it. If the mixture is too dry, add witch hazel slowly and in very small increments (think splashes versus real measurements). If the mixture starts fizzing, you’re going to fast and adding too much.

Once the mixture is of proper consistency, grab a plastic egg and cut the top from the bottom, separating it in two pieces. Fill the bottom portion of the plastic egg about 1/2 way full with bath bomb mixture. Drop in a chick “surprise” and fill the remainder of the bottom egg with bath bomb mixture. Press down gently. Fill the top half of the egg with mixture, and tamp gently. Apply more mixture to both halves of the egg mold, overfilling each side. Press the two molds together (do not snap the plastic egg shut). Gently remove the top half of the plastic egg. If the mold is sticking, lightly tap on the top and sides of the mold. Leave the bath bomb to dry for 2-5 minutes. Flip the bath bomb over (mold on top), and gently remove it from the mold. Again, if you’re having difficulties removing the bath bomb, lightly tap on the top and sides.

Let your homemade bath bombs dry out overnight before use. Done!
