Baker’s twine is one of those materials that I always grab if I find it at a good price… so when I saw gold baker’s twine, I bought two giant rolls. Obviously. Because gold. But then I never did anything with it, until I realized that it would make an excellent tassel. And the gold baker’s twine tassel garland was born! Click through to check out my tutorial.
The result is subtle with a touch of glam, thanks to the gold wire wrap at the top of each tassel. So let’s get started!
Here’s what you’ll need for your tassel garland …
Materials
- Gold and white baker’s twine
- Jute twine
- Thin gold wire
- Scissors
- Pliers
- 4 x 4″ piece of cardboard
Begin by wrapping the baker’s twine around the cardboard repeatedly… I did about 15 full wraps for each tassel.
Cut through the twine on one side of the cardboard.
Lay your pieces out on your work surface and tie a 5″ piece around the middle.
Next, fold the pieces in half so the 5″ tie is on one end, as shown above. Cut an 8″ piece of gold wire and wrap it tightly around the twine, about 3/4″ from the tie. Your first tassel is complete! Repeat this process as many times as you want – I made 12.
Cut a piece of jute twine to your desired length (I made mine a little longer than my mantel, where I would be hanging it). Use the ties at the top of each tassel to attach them to the jute twine at regular intervals. Tie double knots and then trim the excess. Cut across the bottom of each tassel to make sure that all of the twine pieces are relatively similar in length.
And your garland is finished! Totally easy, right?
It’s super light, so it can be attached using small pieces of tape. I hung mine on my handmade mantel (check out the DIY here) using small pieces of gold tape.
These little tassels are super festive, with their metallic finish and striped look. The jute twine adds a touch of a rustic feel, so it’s not overly glam.
You might also try making this in other colors – a bright red and white would be perfect for the holidays. Which brings me to my next point….
This garland is perfect for any season! Doesn’t it look pretty on our gold Christmas tree?
This tassel garland is so festive and fun!! I’ve never seen gold baker’s twine before, I’ll have to do a search. I can’t wait to make this for our Christmas trees! Thanks for the fantastic tutorial!
Thanks Judy! I bought mine at Michael’s, but they also sell it on Amazon 🙂
Thank you, Faith! I appreciate you getting back to me on this!
