We had enough of our dated kitchen, so we decided to give it a full-on facelift, while staying on a budget. Follow along with our whole series: Lidy’s Kitchen Makeover.
The last area we really needed to tackle in our kitchen makeover was the tiny mudroom entrance in the back of the kitchen. It was the black hole of the space where everything piled up and overflowed. We knew we wanted to keep it simple, while still having it feel a part of the kitchen as a whole!
Note: The walls were prepped and complete beforehand when we applied the Shiplap Paneling.

Replace the lighting! This is a small step that has big impact and is easily overlooked. Who really wants boring “blah” lighting anyway?
We opted for modern lighting that still had a Scandinavian-vibe to flow with the rest of the overall space.

Find storage that suits your needs. Some of the biggest issues with small spaces is inadequate storage, which leads to clutter and that can create chaos.
Because our backdoor was getting used a lot from the kids playing outdoors often and being the only access to our garage in the back, we knew a proper shoe storage cabinet was a must! Finding a piece that fit the wall in our mudroom perfectly was a challenge, but alas, we found one that still allowed for a little breathing space surrounding the wall.

Bring in a mirror! Mirrors are a great way to reflect light, giving off the illusion that the tiny space is a bit bigger. And they can be quite useful for those last minute touch-ups on your way out the door.
It’s all about balance, so we chose a round mirror to counteract the rectangular shoe cabinet.

Personalize the space by hanging a piece (or a few pieces) of art to adorn the walls. We didn’t want the mudroom to feel like an after-thought, so adding art created character and brought in much needed color! It also ties this area to the rest of the room as a whole.

Once the walls are decorated nicely, let’s not forget the floors. A patterned rug with vibrant colors make the small space feel inviting and cozy. Your feet should feel like they never want to leave!

Lastly, the little details. We brought in a couple small plants that were appropriate for the type of sunlight we get in that space during the day. We also added a ceramic bowl for holding keys and phones. Now everything will feel tidy and complete!
