Make It: DIY Knock-Off Anthropologie Hanging Frame

by on Jul 11, 2016

I love minimal, simple frames, so when I saw this set of frames from Anthropologies, I absolutely I fell in love. I was actually going to purchase a few, but then I realized that they were no longer available. So I figured I could attempt to DIY a similar version. And guess what? I did! Read on to find out how…

Materials

  • Float frame: I got mine from Walmart.
  • Spray paint: I chose Krylon Short Cuts Gold Leaf
  • Super Glue or Hot Glue
  • Small metal washers
  • Clothes pins or hair pins
  • Gold necklace: I bought two at a garage sale for less than a dollar. You could also do leather or twine…what ever fits you.
  • Jewelry snippers or any type of wire cutter
  • Plastic Spray Paint Primer (not pictured)

Step

Take apart the float frame and super glue the washers to the top piece. I used hair pins to keep the washers in place while the glue dried.

Now the pieces of your frame are ready to paint.

Step

Prime and paint the plastic frame. I used plastic primer for the best adhesion to the plastic frame.

Frame your picture.

Cut your gold strand to length. You wil need to cut off the clasps. Feed the strand through the back of the frame and tie a knot in front of the frame. Dab with super glue the place where the exess strand comes out of the knot and let dry. When dry, cut off the excess strand.

Do the same for the other side of the strand.

Now its time to hang your frame!

Hanging Tip: Since the plastic frame slips on and off, you don’t want the weight of the frame to cause the frame to come apart while hanging. To carry the weight of the picture, I hung the frame using a nail and the clear hardware built into the back of the. The gold strand  was just for looks. You could glue the top piece onto the frame but I wanted the ability to change out the picture.

I love how it turned out especially with the pretty vintage card I have been waiting to frame.

The project took only a couple of hours and was really easy to do. I’m working towards a gallery wall of these hung at different heights. Looking for more wall decor? Check out this Curbly post with more easy DIY wall art.

  1. Hi there,

The link for the frames isn’t working for me.
I’m wondering what frames you used from WalMart?

    thank you!
