Knitting a Rock as Penance
By DIY Maven![]()
As a lad, artist Andy Holden pocketed a rock from the Great Pyramid of Cheops, Giza. For years, he was wracked with guilt over the theft. In 2008 he returned the stone to its rightful place and then started his penance: knitting this gigantic replica now on display at Tate Britain, London. (It puts five Our Father's and ten Hail Mary's to shame, that's for sure.) The exhibition is called Art Now: Andy Holden Pyramid Piece and Return of the Pyra » READ MORE

DIY Nesting Felted Bowls.
By Chrisjob
It's incredible what a washing machine can do!
Ordinary knitted goodies, with their chains and geometry, become something different entirely with a run through the wash cycle. A wonderful case-in-point - these great felted nesting bowls.

"i decided to try to make a bowl using a hat pattern heather gave me a few years ago. after a couple of modifications and prototypes, i’ve come up with a really easy pattern for a felted bowl for beginning knitters, or those who are scared of circular needles, too!" » READ MORE

Recycling Yarn
By DIY Maven
Have you outgrown that favorite sweater? Found a cool sweater at a rummage sale or Good Will that's not exactly your size but the yarn is beautiful? Well, with a little time and patience, you can unravel them and reuse the yarn. Neauveau Fiber Arts talks us through the process and makes it seem not so scary!
A Knitter's Chirstmas Ball
By DIY Maven
Spotted this ingenious little item on Ravelry. It's creator, madamsewingstick, first knitted the tiny piece on regular knitting needles and then transferred it to toothpicks with beads at one end. She slipped the entire piece into a clear glass Christmas ball, suspending the needles by invisible thread.
Knit an Aran Armchair Slipcover
By DIY Maven
While suffering disappointment earlier today at my favorite craft store--they were out of the yarn I wanted--I meandered over to the pattern books and found a copy of Erika Knight's Simple Knits with a Twist: Unique Project for Creative Knitters ($15.96). I about let out a whoop when I flipped the pages to a picture of this knitted slipcover. I'm not sure how practical it would be, but it certainly is beautiful! Now...if I could just convert th » READ MORE
Joy's Circles of Blankety Goodness
By lilybeeA chum of mine has just finished this lovely bit of loveliness:
It's a blanket made of knitted circles with crocheted edges. Joy has been working on it for an age, and says that while the pattern (which she learnt at The Knit Cafe here in Toronto) is simple it is labour intensive, as it takes 300(!) circles to make a good-sized blanket. But what a great, fun, and elegant way to use up scraps of yarn. » READ MORE
Creepy, Crafty Glow-in-the-Dark Yarn.
By Chrisjob
Perfect for upcoming Halloween crafts, safety, or for the emerging knitting/rave scene (it could happen....), Bernat's has introduced glow-in-the-dark yarn. Available in six shades, it'd be great from the obvious spider-web creation to full-blown crocheted trick-or-treat costumes (though I suggest you get started). I look forward to seeing some finished and fully-charged projects.

How To Create Custom Knitting and Crocheting Patterns.
By ChrisjobI must admit: I haven't taken the time to become very skillful at knitting or crocheting. I can do it, I just generally don't. It's partially because I'm not much for repetitive activity, but its mostly because I know I'm gonna have to get really good at it before I can start making my own designs or patterns.
The KnitPro web app from Microrevolt says, "nuh-uh". The KnitPro website allows anyone to upload artwork, and produce a grid designed for h » READ MORE

Mathematics and Knitting
By Tadiera
(Image found on Stash, Knit, Repeat while looking at examples of Fibonacci in knitting)
If you've done any amount of knitting (or crocheting), you know math is involved. Whether it's calculating your gauge, or so simple as counting your cast-on stitches (I go in multiples of 10- what about you?), you have to have at least a basic understanding of math.
However, some patterns take it beyond that. There's Panta, which requires you measure the circu » READ MORE
