I'm an archivist and all around history geek. My Practical Archivist blog is packed with free tips on how to organize and preserve family treasures -- especially photographs.

I have a big love for things I like to call beautiful anachronisms.

A beautiful anachronism is a treasure that has washed up from another time. I'm thrilled by Victorian steampunk items made out of mahogany, brass and velvet. But I also adore candy-colored plastic 1970s kitsch, especially when it involves 8-Tracks.

I'm slightly craft-impaired, but delight in seeing what crafty folks can do to recycle obsolete technology and other unwanted items. I discovered curbly thanks to DIY Maven's fantastic CD recycling post.

There are two types of cased images that date back to the 1800s: ambrotypes and daguerreotypes.

The quick and easy way to tell the difference between the two is that a daguerreotype will look like a mirror when you move it in the light. An ambrotype will not.

The coolest of beans, indeed!  Your blog is terrific - I've got a couple of your posts bookmarked in my To Do folder, in fact!  Happy to be friends... and pleased to meet you, Sally J!   :)

Are you by any chance the same Practical Archivist who's on blogspot? If so, I'm a fan - and a subscriber!

Wow! I would call is strongly craft-impaired. But don't worry, you always can learn how to do it, if you wish so.
