A Viceroy Makeover

Behold: The Viceroy recreation (shown above).
What You Need:
(1). An eye for design.
(2). Blik.
(3). A good upholsterer.
(4). IKEA access.
(5). Plate hangers.
What You Do:
WHATEVER YOU WANT. The essence of the Viceroy Hotel, located in Santa Monica and known throughout the country as the world-renowned 'design hotel', is that anything goes. The designers of the Viceroy pair unexpected pieces with bold color palettes for a sophisticated and surprising look.
When I first took a look at what would be my new bedroom, I was quite unimpressed. With high cathedral ceilings and a lackluster paint job, I was reluctant to consider this a haven. But with a few trips to a thrift store and a LOT of plates, this is now my favorite room in the house.
What We Did:
The unexpected. Here were our steps:
(1). A trip to Blik, online. The #1 source for wall decals, this saved us from the horror of a massive paint job. We chose the Iron Vine design in silver, which brings out the black and white contrast. $50 for a set, but well worth the price.
(2). Scoured thrift stores for vintage plates. We found all sorts of interesting chandelier plates for just a buck a pop. Paired with the wall decals, it creates a great backdrop that rises all the way to the ceiling. Numerous compliments ensued.
(3). Trip to IKEA for the Billy bookcase and a white lamp. Instant storage for under $75.
(4). Another trip to thrift stores merited all decor items found in bookshelves. Favorite find? Black horse pencil holder on top shelf (.25 cents). We also found the chair for $10 and had it reupholstered for around $300. Side table was $50, paired with vintage phone and book stand on top.
(5). To add to the black/white concept, I covered all reference books in black and white wrapping paper from Old Navy (great selection right now) to store in the bookshelves. Also found black birdcage at Target for $19.99.
Total Makeover Price: $549
Proof that good design doesn't have to mean expensive design!
