Intro to Digital Photography: Week 6 (composition continued)
By DIY Maven
Last week we covered composition, which we’re extending into this week as well. For more ideas when composing a good picture, our instructor suggested we try a few or all of the following:
1. Eschew centering everything. To focus on your subject but placing it off-center, practice with the ‘hold-focus’ feature on your camera. This is when you press the shutter half-way down (which holds the focus), re-frame your shot and take the pic.
2. Use the rule of thirds by placing important elements at those points where the lines intersect.
3. Images of horizontal and vertical lines are oftentimes static; images using diagonals, pyramids and curves suggest movement. Experiment with both and see what feelings are evoked by the outcome.
4. Frame a subject with a doorway, branches, etc to add depth to an image.
5. Try getting very close to a subject and exclude everything else extraneous to the shot. If you’re going to crop a persons head, do it fearlessly.
6. Keep it simple.
7. Don’t be afraid to fill the frame.
8. Always take pictures of that delight YOU.
