Spray-Painting Wicker

By cathigs

I need help! I have these cool Madras baskets around my home for storage and would love the free dresser I picked up to look the same. I don't have a picture of the dresser, but it's all white. The pictures below are pretty close.

It's going to have a glass counter put on top and be used in a room for storage/etc (I'm a makeup artist and don't always want my kit and products laying around). I want to change the nob handles too.

Any ideas on how to get the varied brown colors on the wicker? I am pretty good with a spray paint can. I was thinking of putting a straw nozzle on the end of a spray paint can and trying to make long, skinny strokes of color with all three browns.

Great plan! I think that is what I will do over the 3 day weekend. Thanks guys- I will take pictures too!

That makes me think you could spray or brush one coat lighter brown, let dry and then paint a darker color over and wipe that off.  You'll need a brownish base color when you wipe off your paint.  Otherwise, you'll just see white underneath.

Good points- I will look at some of my painting books at home. I don't really want to paint the baskets to match, but I wonder if spraying and then wiping off some color with a rag might do the trick?

I agree with MHET; that's hard to duplicate. Have you considered spray-painting both in the same color?

It may be hard since the baskets look like they are more a raffia material and the dresser looks like ard surfaced wicker.  Get some faux painting books and see if there is any method you could try.  It's hard to fake a look like that.  I'll do some research and get back to you if I find something.
