Wanna Hang Out? Clotheslines YAY or NAY?

By lilybee A_clothesline_medium

"There's a whole generation of kids growing up today who think a clothesline is a wrestling move,"      Dalton McGuinty, Ontario's Premier, (on lifting Ontario's clothesline ban.) Clotheslines have a lot going for them, they're free, they make things smell nice, they don't use fossil fuels, you don't have to plumb or plug them in, you don't have to sit in a non-air conditioned laundry room guarding them so no one makes off with your unmentionables, when they're not in use they practically disappear... all good stuff. They're also ILLEGAL in some cities. Until April Toronto was one of those... »MORE

Repurposing Headboards

By rdougher 100_0470_thumb

I'm looking for new ideas to repurpose a headboard and footboard set I picked up at a garage sale.   I've made a buffet table and a bench before from another set, but this one doesn't lend itself to either item, (at least not in the same format I used before).  Anyone have any suggestions for a DIYer who likes to create on the cheap? »MORE

First Place

By sillygirl Hautegreen

So I'm moving into my first real home in a couple of weeks... I'm so excited, mostly because my current apartment is in a really bad part of town... but there are a couple of things I was wondering if anyone knows how to do... First, for some reason it's common in my area to use colored bricks... Mine are an ugly yellow color. Is there anyway to paint bricks brick colored without painting everything (including the grout) or having the paint flake off? Also, any ideas for way to update a drop ceiling basement? I can't afford new tiles... »MORE

HELP ME: Interior design ideas!

By ukmusicfreak Dsc02500

When we moved into our home almost 5 years ago we just used my furniture and didn't go out and buy new stuff. It looks pretty good, but I'd really like to make it more user friendly. Right now we have a fairly oversized sofa, chair and ottoman, as well as a too large armoire/entertainment unit in the room. Our problem is that really only two people sitting on the sofa can see the tv. That's fine, since it's only my husband and I (and our 11 month old baby) at our place. However, when we have friends or family... »MORE

Spray-Painting Wicker

By cathigs Worldmarket_basket_medium

I need help! I have these cool Madras baskets around my home for storage and would love the free dresser I picked up to look the same. I don't have a picture of the dresser, but it's all white. The pictures below are pretty close. It's going to have a glass counter put on top and be used in a room for storage/etc (I'm a makeup artist and don't always want my kit and products laying around). I want to change the nob handles too. Any ideas on how to get the varied brown colors on the wicker? I am pretty good with a spray... »MORE

Need tip for Zurich design shop

By readjulia Thumb4_medium

A friend of mine just got married and is setting up home in Zurich -- I wondered if anyone could recommend any cool home furnishing/design shops in Zurich where I can get her a gift certificate as a wedding present? I'd prefer to do it online, of course...a quick Google search wasn't popping up any quick suggestions. »MORE

Interior Design Problem - Hole of Death (or at least injury)

By Talia Family_room_medium

I need some advice (please)!  The house I bought had a cut-out between the office and the family room, with home-made stairs connecting the two spaces (there's a height difference of about 3').  To make best use of both rooms we've removed the stairs and want to close off this gaping hole (1 1/2' deep, 6 1/2' high, 3 1/2' wide).  Currently the hole is a bit of a hazard, but luckily we don't have any toddlers running around to plummet off the edge.  My dog likes to jump through it onto the couch below, so I think she’ll miss... »MORE

Murphy Bed

By sillygirl Hautegreen

Does anyone know how to make a murphy bed or where you can find some cheap ones? I know you can get the mechanical mechanism but turning that into a piece of functional furniture is another story. Thanks! »MORE
