101 Picnic Dishes in 20 Minutes or Less.

By Chrisjob Picnic_watermelon

The New York Times' Mark Bittman admits: "It may be nothing fancier than bologna or tuna salad on white bread, but you’re still likely to have a good time, which is probably why many of us remain devoted to the same picnic foods we’ve eaten all our lives." But sooner or later, a little variety atop the checkered blanket would be nice. But the bulk of the time should be spent outside, not in preparation in the kitchen. So, chef Bittman offers 101 dishes that can be created in little to no time. And if you need an emergency idea... »MORE

Mid Century Modern Makeover: Upholstered Seats

By ModHomeEcTeacher Teenmorgenbench_061a

Finally, the last step of this project - the seats.  The snaps and the backs were more entailed, these  are standard, boxed, no cord, with top stitching.  Take apart the seat tops and boxing, lay it out on your new fabric and cut out the pieces.  1.  Check out the condition of the foam.  If it has become compressed, try using a steamer to refresh the old foam.  This foam bounced right back. 2.  Mark the center points on front and back of the boxing and cushion top.  Line up the center notch of the boxing with the center notch of... »MORE

By Chrisjob 06-30-08-floorplan2

Apartment Therapy, Chicago-version, offers this clever take-along floorplan. The goal is to be able to account for all the components of your room, particularly scale, arrangement in color: "You will want to include basic information like the size and layout of your rooms, color choices (fabric swatches are perfect for this!) and sizes of existing pieces of furniture. Other things that might be helpful are window heights (in case you are curtain shopping), height from the floor to the bottom of your window (in case you need something low to fit under it), and the location of your electrical outlets... »MORE

Mid Century Modern Makeover: The Back Cushions

By ModHomeEcTeacher Teenmorgenbench_073a

Making the back cushions was the only complicated part of this project.  Once I figured out the length of the tabs and how to set the snaps, it was a breeze. 1. The first thing I did was take apart the old back cushion and trace it on the new fabric. 2.  Make the snap tabs using the old pattern. 3.  Cut bias strip 1 3/4" wide for welt cord.  See my welt cord tutorial. 4. Starting at the center of the bottom I stitched the cording all the way around the front piece of the cushion, clipping corner turns as shown and... »MORE

How To: Attach Stuff to Walls without Drilling Holes.

By Chrisjob Fo2hkgqfhy0i8sl

Instructables user HighwayKind wanted to keep his kitchen a little more organized: "I didn't want to ruin my kitchen tiles and wall by drilling a giant hole through it, but I did want to hang my knife and paper/foil thing to the wall. Solution: superglue and magnets." Check out the process here...I'm not quite sure whether it's any more wiser to superglue stuff to the wall than to drill into it, but clever, nonetheless. »MORE

DIY:Ten Minute Snap Workshop

By ModHomeEcTeacher Teenmorgenbench_043ac

You thought the DIY: Ten Minute Grommet Workshop was easy, this makes that look like Rocket Science. Oftentimes you'll come across something that needs a snap added or replaced.  Snaps are...well, a snap.  A snap tool and components are available at fabric stores and they are work fine.  The only trick here is to remember which parts go where.  For simplicity sake, I will call the top of the snap Top A and its connecting piece Top B.  The bottom of the snap or the "male" end will be Bottom A and Bottom B.    1.  Poking a hole where the... »MORE
