Labyrinth 2.0, bigger, better, stronger

By beccajo Img_4309

Ok so my mom, dad and I built a Labyrinth in their lower yard about 3 weeks ago. We planted some low groundcover, but unfortunately, while they were on vacation, the weeds took over. Even though she put yellow flags in the ground at our 'terminal lines' and 'bridges', we could no longer see the rows of flowers that we planted, or really anything else.  Since the walkways were kind of narrow to begin with, we decided to start over from scratch.  So we pulled up the flags and marker stones and re-raked it lightly.  There will be pink... »MORE

Labyrinth in the Lower Yard!

By beccajo Labirynth_thumb

My parents have been undergoing a transformation of their property, and this last week, my mom and I installed a Labyrinth. Not including the leveling of the ground, (because it was done by a bobcat during some earlier landscaping work) we spent about three hours total including deciding on a design. Here's how we did it! WHAT YOU'RE GONNA NEED: A hoe A shovel A rake A friend Flower seeds (choose something low-growing with little flowers, we used pink soapwort flowers) Grass seeds Rocks Some sticks or garden markers A long string A design (check out old art books or... »MORE

ANTS!!!!

By beccajo Anteater_medium

I got an ant problem in my apartment. I've tried some of Chris's earlier suggestions, but with no success! Mostly it's my own fault, I didn't notice a honey spill that had seeped under my coffee maker until a few days ago. I lifted up the coffee maker and there was a swarm of dead and dying ants in a pool of hardening honey. Not a bad way to go for an ant, but still. YEESH!  But now I'm house sitting for my parents, and they have those really big black ants everywhere. Still, it could be worse........ But I... »MORE

Ice Stone: Sustainable Surfaces

By beccajo Icestone_medium

Included in Erin's list of Go Green without Going Crazy was the company Ice Stone. One of a few companies to be certified Cradle to Cradle *, Ice Stone is basically a replacement for any surface where marble or tile might be used.  Glass is embedded in a concrete-type material, and then finished as you choose.  You can even ship your unused materials and old surfaces back to the company to be reused! While glass is still relatively easy to recycle in most parts of the country, the 2005 rate for recycling was only about 25%.  If Ice Stone can keep some of... »MORE

Jewelry for your tree?

By beccajo Treeshinycenterbrushednt2_medium

Is this for real? You know I love trees as art and  branches for jewelry, now this?   From the Tree Jewelry website: "When was the last time your favorite tree demanded anything from you? Attention? Conversation? Compliments? Surprise that oak, that maple, that honey locust. Drape a gleaming stainless steel necklace around your precious. Fitted on indestructible marine line, finished with marine hardware. Lasts forever." I suppose it's a little more affordable than diamonds for a dogwood...... »MORE

Bring the outdoors in-Easy Project!

By beccajo Img_3513_thumb

Hey folks, hope the Easter Bunny found you this morning!I had promised to bring the centerpiece to my family's dinner today, but I forgot to get the flowers last night. All the grocery stores were closed this AM, so I came up with another solution. My dad cut a few branches off an apple tree my folks have growing in their yard, and I gathered scissors, a wire cutter, a pin, some different pink construction paper, and some thin wire (I think about 22-24 gauge? It's like silver floral wire).  I also had a small wood box, you could set these in... »MORE

Chickens in the City

By beccajo Chicken

I'm trying to convince one of my friends to raise chickens in the heart of St. Paul.  Apparently, you  need to get the approval of 75% of your neighbors within a 100ft radius before you can get them, and Minneapolis has similar rules.  The most recent issue of Make Magazine featured an article on raising just hatched chicks, and their site contains some more articles from chicken-raisers, their challenges and successes. (picture from of JustFood.org)     I even picked up brochures on chicken hatchers at a feed mill last weekend. My folks and I went to a couple of... »MORE

My Own Personal Green Acres

By beccajo Beccajo_medium

I'm a bookstore junkie. So much so, that friends know to look for me at our local Barnes and Noble if I'm not answering my phone. My idea of a perfect day is to snuggle up in one of their comfy chairs with a caffiene and sugar laced beverage, and bliss out on home decor magazines and books. But lately, I've noticed a shift. I've found myself being drawn more frequently to Country Living and Mary Engelbreit, than to British Elle Decor or Metropolitan Home. I even feel like post-prison, Martha has focused more on the 'country livin'. Oh and... »MORE

Shed a little light....

By beccajo Uoredlantern_medium

I have a weakness for wee little candleholders like this one from Urban Outfitters for $28.  And for only $12 I could snap up this little teal number. Also comes in bright pink (for only $6!) or glossy white. Would look great with this rug! Paper Source has an even more intricately designed lantern, and in a more subdued palette of white, caramel, grey, and orange. I think I'm gonna keep my eye out for like a billion punched lanterns to go on my covered porch...... »MORE
