Sewing in style: Hello Kitty sewing machines @ Target

Target! How I love thee! Let me count the ways. Well, other than the $50 Target cover charge, which is maddening. Has anyone ever walked out of Target without spending at least $50? I know I have not been able to.

So, here's the latest thing I absolutely need from Target:  A Hello Kitty Sewing Machine. I have been considering buying a sewing machine for some time to replace the one from 1970 that my mom gave me. It works, but it's getting a little long in the tooth. The Hello Kitty sewing machine is only $60 and is a very simple machine without a lot of frills. That's just what I need since I don't know how to do anything fancy, anyway. My sewing is pretty dismal.

But would it be less dismal if I got to look at Hello Kitty's happy face every time I started sewing? I think so! And since it's a Janome, it's most likely a decent quality. I can't wait til payday.

Hey Ivy, I just spotted this on Craftzine.

Malissa Long writes in to let us know that the Janome Hello Kitty sewing machine, although super cute, just isn't a good machine. Malissa recommends the Brother CS-6000 which we also talked about in our sewing machine round up last December.

Malissa writes:

The machine you recommended with out a review is a piece of crap. I've had 2 sewing students who owned them and a third person I met who had one and not one of them worked properly. If your looking to recommend a machine to a beginner sewer check out the Brother CS-6000, there are several different model # that are the same. It has speed control, comes with a DVD, and has lots of cool stitches. It's very easy to use and very light weight( 5lbs). I'm an expert sewer, but use one as my carry around machine I've put it through the trenches the past 1 1/2 years and it's held it's ground. When I first got it, I used it at least 30 hours a week for at least 4 months, that's a lot for a machine I paid $215 with tax for.

Get a great deal on the Brother CS-6000 on overstock.com for only $139.99.

I'm desparately trying to ignore the fact that I already have two machines in perfect working order. One is a nicer one that does the fancy stitches, and the other is a simple workhorse, that would be perfect for teaching my daughter to sew on. *casts guilty glances in the direction of said machine*

plus, this machine is super-super-cute! i'm trying to figure out if I need another one!!...maybe for my students? :)

I began sewing at 5 or 6 years old, so having your daughters start to sew now, is perfect in my opinion! I love sewing still!

Aha!! Thank you!! My daughter is 7 in September :-D  Thank you!! I'm thinking- BIRTHDAY PRESENT!!! (if she wants it!!)

My daughter is 6 (7 in October), and I will probably let her use it with me, with careful supervision.

How old do you think a kid should be, before letting them start to learn on this thing?

Oh no! I think I'm going to need to buy one of these! The one I have now is fine, but it's really old and nowhere near as adorable. Maybe if I get this I'll be more motivated to sew things with all of the fabric I buy/stockpile..
