For an astoundingly cheap fix for a modern low bed...  buy 4 legs (the 4" ones reserved for well, beds), purchase 2 - 2x4s. Screw 2x4s onto your boxspring's underside vertically.  Fasten legs appropriately to the corners onto the 2x4s.  Drape a size larger flatsheet over said boxspring upsidedown and with straight pins, straighten out the corners, gathering edges so that you're creating a cover for the boxspring.  remove and sew on a machine (or by hand if you're mad) and cut excess.  Slip adorable cover over boxspring to hide the 2x4s and slap on your mattress.  Taa.  Fabulous for under $30. bucks. 

Well, maybe not ideal, but definitely worth the price.

I'm a craft blogger, new to this site, and aggravated already, because I have just written the same helpful comment to this post twice. The first time, I did not have an account (or know that I needed one to comment), and while I went through the process of getting an account in a different browser tab, waiting to be able to log in and post my comment, my comment was lost. In other words, it was lost during my login.

The second time, I posted an even more helpful (therefore longer)  version of my comment, and received a feedback message that it was "too long" - the only problem was, no version of my comment was offered for editing, it was simply lost in the ether, and there was no indication while I was writing it that it was near to going over any arbitrary "limit."

I would love to participate in this site, but at the moment I feel its programming isn't up to par. I shouldn't have lost a lengthy comment TWICE in the normal course of things.

Or we just bought a metal platfrom bed from BrandsPlace.com.  But I found a bunch of platform beds at this site that I thought were reasonable.  Some decent designs.

I used to have a platform bed from West Elm and liked it.  Most of their furniture is a little more reasonable than Design (just out of) Reach.

Well if you are handy I would suggest building one yourself. You can achieve a nice low bed with a very simple design. You could simply build a square frame that rests on the floor at the desired height by using 8x8. This would give you a nice 8 inch rise off the floor you could even go with 8x6 or 8x4 if you want real low. Of course cut the length to be  abit smaller than the mattress so you can create a nice overhang which is very modern. Once you built the frame you just need to create the platform for the bed to rest on, a nice piece of 3/4 ply would work. Make sure to cut it to fit the mattress. Then just for a nice clean look take some finishing pieces and build a very low frame around the ply so the mattress will sit inside the frame and finish the rough edge of the ply.
