hyoomen...you are absolutely right! I think if people would try re-usable (I have something similar to the GreenBags, which I found at my grocery store) they wouldn't ever go back to single use, if ONLY for the fact that the re-usable bags are incredibly sturdy. You can put twice as much into them as any paper or plastic bag because you know they can handle the weight. I'll never go back to single use.

The GreenBags are spectacular and widely available from a number of retailers at this point (including Whole Foods Market). They are probably the most common of the promotional bags out there at this point.
You might also consider checking out your local Salvation Army or Goodwill for bags of the sort Stephee was referring to.
As for the question of paper or plastic, I do not think a case can be made for one as better than the other. No single-use bag can ever be championed, right? ;) Yay for reusable bags.

I have been using "give-away" promotional tote bags from a couple of trade shows I went to for my groceries for the last few months. They are great! You can carry so many more groceries in these than the disposable plastic bags, and you can fling them over your shoulder.
